Tobacco Use on School Grounds Prohibited By State Law and School Board Policy

Please be advised that PA Law 1223.5, enacted on February 20, 2001, prohibits the possession and/or use of any tobacco product on any property in the control of a school district. Towanda Area School Board Policy # 904, Public Attendance of School Events, Community Section, establishes the school board policy to support the law also.

It has been brought to our attention that spectators attending athletic and extracurricular activities are smoking outside of the new gym, in the parking lot and at other locations on school premises. This is a violation of PA State law. All visitors on school property are directed not to possess or use tobacco products on school district property. The District will ask the Towanda Borough Police to issue a summary offense to anyone violating this law.

This issue is a matter of health and safety as well as a role modeling issue for our youth. If you wish to use tobacco products you will have to drive or walk off the school district premises. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Guardian Angel Project

Sue Ide, Assistant Director of the Bradford County Probation Department will once again coordinate the Guardian Angel Project in memory of her friend and colleague, Penny Farley. Mrs. Farley was an employee of the Bradford County Probation. She died following a courageous battle with cancer. The Guardian Angel Project will be conducted for 8 weeks starting in June of 2012 at the Towanda Area School District facilities. The anticipated start date is Tuesday, June 19th. The participants will meet on Tuesdays from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Guardian Angel Project pairs an adult mentor with a young person who is on probation. The youth and adult work to paint a guardian angel together during the course of the project. Upon completion of the painted angel the group takes a one-day field trip to Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse where each pair presents its guardian angel to a terminally ill child. The project was first started in Iowa. The purpose of the project is to instill compassion on the juveniles who find themselves on probation following incidents of poor judgment that have led to a probationary status. It is also hoped that the youth on probation will appreciate their own good health and will learn from the knowledge that they can do good things for others. It certainly puts their own respective problems in perspective following the hospital visit. The adult role models establish a relationship and common purpose with their assigned youth during the course of the project. Healthy mentoring is always a good influence for young people.

Any adult mentor wishing to be considered for participation should contact Mrs. Sue Ide at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"Make a Change" for Towanda High School Students

Senior Zack Ripic would like to you to "make a change" for Towanda High School Students. His senior project is a campaign for donations to "Make a Change" for funding of student programs that have recently been eliminated from the budget with necessary budget cuts. Donation containers will be available during events that require an admission fee.

The main goal of this senior project is to raise money for the students participating in extracurricular activities. Fans have the opportunity to donate spare change at the time of admission in to a school sponsored event at the high school. All contributions will go into a Student Activity Fund (SAF). Donations will be used for activities that are currently unable to be funded. Examples include: Band front/Cheerleader transportation to away games and matches, club travel for scholastic competition events (such as FBLA, Forensics), and any other non-funded activity in which many students participate in.

The students of Towanda High School ask you to "Make a Change" and be a part of our goal to support the spirit of our school and KNIGHT PRIDE!
