PSSA Tips for Parents

  • Mark testing dates on your calendar so you can plan for these days
    • ELA Test: April 15, 16, 17 (Grades 3-8)
    • Math Test: April 30, May 1 (Grades 3-8)
    • Science Test: April 29 (Grade 4) / April 30, May 1 (Grade 8)
  • Do what you can so your children get a good night’s sleep before the test
  • Pack lunches and backpacks the night before – this will help everyone to feel less rushed in the morning
  • Encourage your children to wear comfortable clothing
  • Get your child to school on time
  • Take time to encourage your child to do their best during the testing window. Some ideas include:
    • Send a note in your child’s backpack with an encouraging message
    • Ask your child about the tests each day
    • Tell your child that you are proud of the effort they are making
    • Plan a family celebration when testing is complete

In addition, we will remind students of these test-taking strategies. It would help if you could remind your child of these tips as well

  • Take your time. Check your answers and show your work
  • Read questions carefully, and feel free to take notes as you read
  • Be sure to answer every question
  • Proofread your writing to see if it makes sense
  • Relax and do your best

Finally, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has a cell phone policy that restricts most electronic devices from testing sites. PDE requires a strict policy on cell phones and electronics in order to ensure the security of test materials. In our district, students are not permitted to have cell phones or electronic devices during test sessions, and they are not allowed in testing rooms. We strongly encourage students to leave their cell phones or electronic devices at home on testing days. If students do bring cell phones and electronic devices to school, please encourage them to comply with test administrator requests to collect the items until the assessment is completed.
