Special Education

Dear Parent:

The Towanda Area School District is committed to the education and health and safety of our students.

The Towanda Area School District is currently closed for health and safety reasons by order of the Governor and Department of Education, and in-person services cannot be provided. The Towanda Area School District has considered options such as providing services in the home, but that option has been rejected for health and safety reasons. Additionally, the Towanda Area School District considered providing enrichment and review only, but this was rejected due to our core belief that education is very important and necessary for our students.

During this time of the COVID-19 virus emergency shutdown, the School District will strive to provide the special education services that your child needs to progress in their educational program.  Students will receive enrichment and review for several weeks.  If the emergency shutdown continues, we may move into providing planned instruction.

The Towanda Area School District carefully considered the type of programming that is offered in your student’s IEP and the current limitations on school operations resulting from the pandemic, government orders, and health and safety concerns.

This emergency plan will remain in place until further notice or until the Towanda Area School District is able to resume normal operations.  The District understands that the services that can be provided under the present conditions may not meet all normal requirements. When District operations return to normal, the District will reach out to you regarding your child’s education.

It should be clearly noted that if not for the pandemic emergency, the District would continue to provide a continuity of education in the physical school buildings.

On behalf of the Towanda Area School District and myself, thank you for your understanding and cooperation in these difficult times. If you have questions, please call the Special Education Office at 570-268-2008.

                                                              Sincerely,
