English III 9/19

Greetings My Dears and My Darlings!

We started today's English III class with a journal check (Journal #2 to be specific).  If you didn't get this done on time, you can still earn half credit (5 points) if you bring it to me tomorrow.

After the journal check, we took some notes on Theme.  Those notes and the corresponding PowerPoint are posted below.  After we completed these brief notes, we did a quick inventory of the themes in The Catcher in the Rye.  Tomorrow we will be using some of these themes to create theme statements and to support those theme statements.

Homework: Reading Chapters 13-15 of The Catcher in the Rye.  There will be a brief reading quiz at the beginning of tomorrow's class.

Happy Reading! :) EHock

Greetings and Salutations!

Today in class, we started by taking our chapters 10-12 reading quiz.  If you missed it, please come talk to me.

After our quiz, I explained our 2nd Journal Prompt, and then we spent today's class writing.  I allowed students to listen to music - If in the future you would like to do that, please bring headphones with you to class.

Homework: I will be checking today's journal prompt for completion tomorrow at the beginning of class.  When we are finished with the last prompt for The Catcher in the Rye, I will collect your journals and grade them for content.  Tomorrow's grade is an on-time grade, so you can't earn the points back if you don't get it done on time.

Happy Writing!! :) EHock

This is a photo of the final draft of our Towanda Power Hierarchy.  We based it on the traditional power hierarchy of Renaissance England.  We are going to use it as we write our Renaissance Faire Skits.

Greetings!

Today in class, we started with a homework check.  I asked students to complete the "Character Activity" which required them to find examples in the first 9 chapters of The Catcher in the Rye and explain how those examples represented our literary terms.

Period 2: You were a little behind and took a reading quiz on chapters 7-9.  Please see me if you missed it.

After I checked the homework, I went over each category with the class, giving my own examples and explanations and then asking for theirs.  I included my examples in Today's PowerPoint, so if you missed class, you may use those to compare to your own answers.  However, if you haven't completed the exercise yet, please come up with your own examples - don't just use mine.

If we had any time left in class, I allowed students to start reading Chapters 10-12 (their reading homework for the night).  There will be a reading quiz at the beginning of class tomorrow.  Please be prepared.

Happy Reading!  :) EHock

Salutations!

Today in English III, we started by taking a 5 question reading quiz on this weekend's reading homework (Chapters 7-9 of The Catcher in the Rye).  If you did not take that quiz, please come see me.

After we completed the quiz and graded it together, we finished our class discussion of the Crash Course Video #1 Questions (except for period 4 - we finished those on Friday) which I then collected.  We took notes using today's PowerPoint and our Character Guided Notes (which are posted below).  Afterwards, I let classes begin working on their homework (the character activity at the end of our guided notes word file).

Homework:  Complete the Character Activity using Chs. 1-9 of The Catcher in the Rye.  Each question asks for explanation and support, so please do not give me 1 word answers such as "yes" or "IDK."  Students who do not complete the assignment on-time will lose 5 points on that homework grade.

English III 9/13

Greetings Friends!  Happy Friday the 13th!

We started today's English III class by checking last night's homework ("Phony" Journal Entry).  After we complete all of our The Catcher in the Rye journal entries, I will collect your journals and you will choose 1 journal for me to grade and comment on.  Today's grade was an on-time, completion grade.  If you forgot to write it last night, you can still get 5 points if you get it to me by Monday, September  16th.

After checking the homework, I introduced the questions we would be answering in small groups after watching Crash Course "Language, Voice, and Holden Caulfield: The Catcher in the Rye Part 1."  While students in class worked in small groups (2 & 3) to answer the questions, you should watch the video and complete the questions on your own if you missed class and need to catch up.

Homework: Read Chapters 7-9 in The Catcher in the Rye.  There will most likely be a reading quiz first thing on Monday.

Happy Reading!  :) EHock
