English IIII 10/7-10/8

On Monday in English III, I started class by checking the "Letter to Holden" Graphic Organizer.  If you haven't yet shown me your work, come see me as soon as possible.

After briefly discussing this graphic organizer (which we will be using to write our essays), I passed out our vocabulary review for our The Catcher in the Rye test (posted below).  I gave students time in class to complete the review.  This first half of the review needed to be finished during class on 10/8 (when I would be passing back a few graded assignments - check skyward).

When students were finished with the vocabulary review, I passed out our theme review for The Catcher in the Rye (posted below).  This review will be due tomorrow so that we can go over both the vocabulary and the themes in The Catcher in the Rye.

Happy Reviewing!  :) EHock

English III 10/4

Today in English III, we started class by reviewing the poem by Robert Burns that we read yesterday (especially the answers to the two discussion questions at the end of the "Understanding Allusion" activity we completed yesterday).

After refreshing our memories, we turned to Part B of that activity (posted below).  Using Burns' poem and the section of chapter 25 where Phoebe is on the carrousel, we found and listed comparisons between both pieces.

This weekend's homework is to complete the planning graphic organizer for our first essay - a literary advice letter to Holden.  The assignment is described in the PowerPoint posted below.

Happy writing! :) EHock

ALLUSION PART B

Please use Robert Burns' poem "Comin Thro' the Rye'" (posted in "Understanding Allusion" yesterday) and the section of chapter 25 when Phoebe is on the carrousel (starting on pg. 211) to complete this activity.

Understanding Allusion

Here is today's activity.  Please use the slide in today's PowerPoint titled Comin Thro' the Rye' to translate some of Burns' words into more recognizable language.   Be sure to answer both questions at the bottom of the poem.

English III 10/3

Today in English III, we started by getting back into pairs and completing our "Tracing the Title" Activity (posted yesterday).  Afterwards we discussed our answers.

After collecting "Tracing the Title," we discussed allusion in literature (definition in PowerPoint) and read "Comin Thro' the Rye'" by Robert Burns.  After reading (and translating Burns' dialect), we answered the two discussion questions at the bottom of the handout (to be posted momentarily).  We will finish this activity tomorrow (Part B of "Understanding Allusion").

No homework tonight.  We will begin reviewing for our test after we finish "Understanding Allusion" tomorrow.

Please get caught up on your reading/journal entries before next week when we take a test and write an essay.

English III 10/2

Hello My Dears and My Darlings!

Today in English III, we started class by reviewing the definitions for yesterday's vocabulary (image, symbol, motif) and discussing the answers to yesterday's activity (posted handout yesterday).

After collecting that handout, we started today's activity (Tracing the Title - posted below).  In order to complete the activity, you will need to copy the passages listed in today's PowerPoint (last slide) onto your activity sheet.  We will finish the activity (chart and analysis questions) tomorrow during class after which we will be discussing the answers.  We will be at least 1 more day analyzing the title of The Catcher in the Rye before we move on to review for our test.

No homework tonight - catch up on past reading or journal entries.  The progress report period is coming to a close soon.

Thanks - :) EHock

English III 10/1

Hello My Dears!

I'm so sorry this update is late - I had some technical difficulties yesterday afternoon.  At the beginning of yesterday's class, I checked Journal Entry #4.  This is the last in our series of journal entries for The Catcher in the Rye.  We will shortly begin writing an essay using these journals, so please make sure you have finished all of them as soon as possible.

After our journal check, we took some notes on Image, Symbol, and Motif in literature.  The note-taking graphic organizer we used is posted below.  Please also complete Part B (which requires writing a few sentences).  We continued our class by completing the Image/Symbol/Motif in Catcher activity (also posted below).  While some classes finished and started discussing the exercise before the end of class, most classes finished the activity and started their discussions at the beginning of class on 10/2.

No homework tonight.  Make sure your Image/Symbol/Motif in Catcher activity is completed for Wednesday.

Thanks - :)EHock
