English III 10/29

There was a substitute in English III today.

Students watched the first 30 minutes (approximately) of Death of a Salesman.  We will have a short watching quiz at the beginning of class tomorrow, after which we will pick up with our regular classes.

English III 10/28

We started today's English III class by discussing our Irony Examples that we started on Friday (assignment slide in PowerPoint).  I collected this assignment after we finished discussing it.

We then moved on to taking notes about Foils in literature (posted in PowerPoint).  I asked students to use the same page in their notebooks to list as many foil pairs as possible and to predict what comparisons and contrasts we would find as we read.

Tomorrow we will go over the foils in Death of a Salesman before we move on to discussing Tragedy.

No homework tonight.  :) EHock

English III 10/25

Today in English III, we started our class by going over the answers to our Arthur Miller Discussion Questions.  Students then turned their work in to me.

After we discussed these questions, we took some notes on Irony (see PowerPoint).  I asked students to record the notes in the notebooks and use that page to complete the assignment (see PowerPoint).  I will be collecting their work on Monday.

Homework: Complete the Irony Example Homework for Monday.

Happy Writing! :) EHock

P.s. Periods 7 & 9: Your "Letter to Holden" essays were due today.  If you turn them in on Monday, they will be late.  I also collected your copies of The Catcher in the Rye.

English III 10/24

Today in English III:

  • Period 2 - started class by discussing the answers to our discussion questions from yesterday.  I then collected their writing.
  • Periods 7 & 9 - started class by discussing why playwrights write plays and their ultimate goals.

In all three classes, I explained today's assignment (Arthur Miller's Obituary Discussion Questions - posted below) and gave students time to read Arthur Miller's Obituary (posted below).  I asked them to work in partners to complete the questions.  We will be going over the answers to these questions first thing tomorrow.

Homework: please complete today's discussion questions for tomorrow's class.

Happy Reading and Writing! :) EHock

English III 10/23

We started today's English III class by turning in both our Death of a Salesman journal entries and our copies of The Catcher in the Rye.

Afterwards, we returned to our Death of a Salesman character maps and background articles to answer 2 questions with a partner (assignment slide posted below).  After discussing the answers to these questions, we will be moving on to discuss Arthur Miller's life and work.

  • Period 2: Your "Letter to Holden" essay was due yesterday - if you haven't turned it in yet, it is now late.  Get me your work as soon as possible.
  • Periods 7 & 9: Your "Letter to Holden" essay is due by this Friday, but the time for extra credit has passed.  Get me your work by the end of the day Friday, or it is late.

No homework tonight.  :) EHock
