English III 10/17

Today in English III, we started class with a homework check.  I asked students to interview a parent last night, asking them to list at least 5 goals they would like to achieve by 65.  Please look at yesterday's class description for more details.  After discussing our parents' goals, we compared them to the goal list that students made yesterday.

We then went on to discuss the article we read in partners during yesterday's class. Using the graphic organizer they made with their partner, we listed what the article claimed the American Dream was and was not.  I also checked this graphic organizer during the HW check.

We moved on to our character description and historical context reading for Death of a Salesman.  I asked students to read through the character list with me in preparation for tomorrow's assignment which will involve reading an article and using the character list to answer some short answer discussion questions.  I will be preparing for the Ren. Faire tomorrow throughout the school day, so I wanted to introduce the assignment before the end of class today.

Tomorrow you will be completing a journal entry for Death of a Salesman.  Please come visit the creative writing/forensics stage during tomorrow's Renaissance Faire.  I think it's going to be solidly entertaining.

No Homework tonight. :) EHock

English III 10/16

Today in English III class, we started by making a two column graphic organizer.  In one column, I asked students to list the goals they would like to reach by the age of 65.  They needed at least 5 goals (personal, professional, bucket list).

After they completed their half of the "Achieve by the age of 65" chart, I asked them to interview a parent or someone approximately their parents' age (teacher, coach, boss, etc.) for tonight's homework.  Please ask them to list what they would like to accomplish by the age of 65.  Try to have at least 5 things in each column.  This is due tomorrow at the beginning of class.

After we discussed our goals and the homework, I introduced the actual definition of the American Dream created in 1931, and we compared and contrasted that definition with the definition we often hear in popular culture.

The final assignment of the day was to read an article called "5 Myths about the American Dream."  Students were asked to use the back of the chart they created for the bell ringer/homework to create another 2 column chart (Column 1: The American Dream is, Column 2: The American Dream is not).  While reading the article in partners, they completed the chart.  This needs to be completed by tomorrow's class (if you didn't already finish the work in class).

Tomorrow, we will be learning more about the historical context of the play Death of a Salesman.  Please have both charts from today's class prepared for tomorrow.

Today in English III, I started class by collecting our review sheets for The Catcher in the Rye.  If you were not here, please turn them in as soon as possible.

Afterwards, we took a 25 question, multiple choice test on The Catcher in the Rye.  If you took the test today, your grade is already in skyward.  Please come see me if you still need to take it.

Tomorrow we will be going to Lab 300 to start our essay on The Catcher in the Rye.  We will be there Friday and Tuesday.

English III 10/9

In English III on 10/9, we reviewed for our test on The Catcher in the Rye using the review sheets posted earlier in the week.  I will be collecting these review sheets before I pass out the test.

The test will be a 25 question multiple choice test.  It will require that everyone have his or her book because the questions are on 3 specific passages from The Catcher in the Rye.

After we take the test on Thursday, we will be going to Lab 300 on Friday to begin our essay on The Catcher in the Rye.

Study Well!  :) EHock
