English III 11/7

We started today's English III class by reviewing where we left off in Death of a Salesman.  We started/continued reading Section II of our play (pg. 38-69).  Most classes should finish Section II tomorrow.

Please update your DoaS summary up to the point where we left off in class today.  When we finish Section II, I will be giving you a few minutes to finish up, but you will not have enough time to write the summary for the entire section.

After we finish reading Section II, we will be watching the film version of Section II in class.

Happy Writing! :) EHock

English III 11/6

Today in English III we finished reading Section I of Death of a Salesman (pg. 1-38).  After we finished our reading, I gave students time to complete their Section I summaries.  We discussed what should be in that summary, and I assigned parts for Section II.

Some classes started reading Section II, but some didn't have enough time.  Either way, tomorrow we will be reading Section II.  Please make sure you have updated your Death of a Salesman summary to the point where we stopped reading.

Happy Writing! :) EHock

English III 11/5

Today in English III, we continued reading Section 1 of Death of a Salesman.  A few classes finished Section 1 (periods 4 and 7), but most of our classes will be finishing Section 1 tomorrow.

Whether your class finished reading Section 1 or not, please update your Section 1 summary to cover everything we read in class.  Tomorrow we will discuss the summary of Section 1 after we finish reading.  We will also be assigning parts for reading Section 2 (remember - volunteering gets you extra credit points).

Homework: Update summary for Section 1 to cover all read materials

Happy Writing! :) EHock

English III 11/4

Today in English III, we began our class by setting up our Death of a Salesman summaries (assignment in PowerPoint below).  We will be completing this summary throughout DoaS, discussing it in class at the end of each section (there are 5).

I asked for reading volunteers for section 1 on Friday.  If you volunteer to read for a section, you get 10 points of extra credit.  Today, we started that reading (with me acting as narrator of stage directions).  Students who didn't get to read during the first section should count on volunteering to read for a later section - there are still plenty of chances.

In all of my classes, we reached the half-way point but did not finish reading section 1.  Tomorrow we will finish reading section 1 and discuss our summaries for that section.

Homework: Complete as much of the summary as possible.

Happy Writing! :) EHock

English III 11/1

We started today's English III class by returning to our pairs and completing the Tragedy Comparison/Contrast graphic organizer we started yesterday (posted below and in yesterday's PowerPoint).

When students were finished, we discussed the information we used to complete this graphic organizer and then handed it in (with the exception of 1st period).  In some classes (periods 4 & 7), we had enough time to start reading Death of a Salesman.  On Monday, all classes will be reading the play together in class.

No Homework.  :) EHock

English III 10/31

Happy Halloween!

Today in English III, we started class by reviewing the traditional definition of tragedy.  After our review, we took notes on Arthur Miller's definition of tragedy (notes posted below - "Tragedy and the Common Man").

After we finished our notes, we created a graphic organizer (photo below) and completed the organizer in pairs.  We will be finishing and discussing this organizer tomorrow at the beginning of class.

If we get enough time, we will also start reading Death of a Salesman in class.

No Homework. :) EHock

Here is a drawing of the Graphic Organizer that we created today in English III.  Please recreate this on a piece of unlined paper and complete the graphic organizer using your tragedy notes (both sets).

English III 10/30

Today in English III, we started class by taking a short watching quiz for the section of Death of a Salesman that we watched yesterday.  If you missed this, don't worry - we will also be reading this section of the play.

After taking and grading the quiz, we moved on to discuss Foils in Death of a Salesman.  On Monday, I asked students to come up with potential categories, parings, and comparisons for the foils in Death of a Salesman.  Today we discussed this work, but I did not collect it.  We will be returning to these ideas later on in Death of a Salesman

After discussing Foils, we took some notes on Tragedy (posted below).  Tomorrow we will be taking some notes on Arthur Miller's definition of Tragedy (which differs significantly from its traditional definition).  Our first day of reading should be Friday.

No homework tonight.  :) EHock
