English III 9/12

Hello My Little Chickens!

Today we started class with a reading quiz on chapters 4-6 of The Catcher in the Rye (please see me if you missed it).  We corrected it together, and they have already been entered into skyward.

After our quiz, we did some brainstorming in partners for our 1st journal entry.  After discussing these ideas as a class, I gave students time to begin their writing in class.

Tonight's Homework:  Write a 1 page journal entry in response to the "Phony" prompt (check today's PowerPoint posted below).  The goal should be to explore your ideas informally, mimicking Holden's better narrative techniques (they are listed in a slide below the prompt).  I will be checking this journal entry for completion at the beginning of tomorrow's class.

Happy Writing!

English III 9/11

Hello Friends!

On 9/11 we started our class by taking a 6 question reading quiz (please come see me if you missed it).  These quizzes measure whether or not students have been doing their reading homework, focusing on basic information in the chapters rather than analysis.

After we corrected that quiz together, I showed students how to find this blog (if you're reading this - it probably worked).  We then started an activity that we will be doing as we read The Catcher in the Rye - composing a summary of each chapter as a class.  While we took our time with this on the first day, students should now know what I expect out of these summaries, making the process faster.

Finally, I assigned Chapters 4-6 of The Catcher in the Rye for homework.  There will most likely be a reading quiz tomorrow at the beginning of class tomorrow, so be prepared.

Happy Reading!

P.s.  If you look at today's PowerPoint, you will see that we will be working on a Journal Entry on 9/12.  Students, please start planning what you will write in your response.

Class Summary 9/10/2013

Greetings!

In today's English III class, we watched and discussed a brief video on J.D. Salinger and his influence on youth culture in America.  In time, I hope to post these videos, but I need to investigate copyright laws for this one.

We then took some notes on literary terms and concepts we will be using and examining while reading J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.  I will post both my PowerPoint and the word file for those guided notes on this blog.

Tonight's homework - Please read chapters 1-3 of The Catcher in the Rye.  There will be a brief 5 question reading quiz at the beginning of class tomorrow.
